LADY WASHINGTON
The 20th century
The original LADY WASHINGTON, or more commonly, Washington, was a 90-ton sloop. Named in honor of the first First Lady of the United States, she was captained by Robert Gray, and later by John Kendrick.
Her early history is still in question. As part of the Columbia Expedition, she left Boston Harbor on October 1, 1787. After the war, she was given a major refit to prepare her for a unprecedented trading voyage around Cape Horn. In 1788, she became the first American vessel to make landfall on the west coast of North America. As a pioneer in Pan-Pacific trade, she was the first American ship to visit Honolulu, Hong Kong and Japan. Washington remained in the Pacific trade – Philippines in 1797.
A somewhat updated modern replica was created in 1989. The replica has appeared in numerous films and television shows, standing in as other real or fictional ships.
