CUTTY SARK
The 19th Century
The CUTTY SARK was once the most famous of the great clippers. She was design by Hercules Linton, and in 1869 launched at Dumbarton in the Scottish Clyde. Her sleek hull enabled her to carry more sails than any previously designed sailing ship which translated into speed. As a result, she spent the 1870s speeding across the high seas of China, and Far East … for the tea trade, establishing a reputation as one of the fastest ships afloat.
After her heyday, in 1895, the CUTTY SARK was sold to a Portuguese company, who renamed her Ferreira.
In 1922, she was purchased by Captain Wilfred Dowmann from England and was given back her original name of CUTTY SARK. Since 1954, she was placed in dry dock in Greenwich, London, and became a unique example of breathtaking ship design and as a symbol of Britain’s proud maritime heritage.
